Two senators are drafting a bill proposal.
Senator Edward Markey stated on Monday that he and Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon are drafting a proposal to restore “net neutrality” rules to federal law. They plan to introduce the bill this summer, and Representative Doris Matsui is working on a companion proposal for the House. The legislation would prevent internet providers from throttling internet connections for profit, empowering the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enforce the accountability necessary in order to make that happen.
Senator Markey’s office stated, “It is more clear than ever that broadband internet is an essential utility” and the FCC’s “authority should reflect that, so it can fulfill its obligations to the public by reinstating net neutrality rules.” Technological firms such as Google and Facebook support net neutrality laws, while internet providers oppose them.
